Brierfield Canal Corridor Housing Project
The Brierfield Canal Corridor Housing Project was identified as an early project in the ADF for acquisition and demolition of properties for new residential development. As a result, it was included within the funding bid to Elevate and was successful in obtaining funding for 2004/5 and a provisional allocation for 2005/6.
The project has been the subject of a detailed consultation exercise during the summer 2004, which included one-to-one meetings with owner-occupiers, tenants and landlords and meetings with groups of residents.
Following on from this consultation exercise, the Council revised the proposals to take some properties out of the demolition project area, but agreed the acquisition and demolition of 136 properties in total in 2 separate areas:
Area 1 : King Street/lower 'Holden Road'
- Acquisition of 35 properties in King Street and the lower part of Holden Road for demolition and redevelopment for new housing. Acquisition will be done initially by agreement, but Compulsory Purchase action will be pursued
- Acquisition of vacant and poor quality rented property in King Street Terrace by negotiation to provide opportunities for people displaced by clearance who want to stay in the area
Area 2: Berkeley Street/Claremont Street/Belgrave Street/ Veevers Street
- Acquisition of canalside land and 101 properties on Berkeley Street, Claremont Street, Belgrave Street and Veevers Street (odd numbers side) and selected gable end properties on Clitheroe Road, for demolition and redevelopment for a range of new housing. Acquisition of property will be done initially by agreement but Compulsory Purchase action will be pursued
- Acquisition of additional properties on the even side of Veevers Street by agreement to provide opportunities for some people displaced from the adjoining streets to stay in the area
