Always put the correct bottles in the correct recycling bank. Blue glass can be put into the green-coloured glass bank, and clear coatings can be put into the clear-coloured glass bank. Light bulbs, sheet glass or Pyrex type dishes should NEVER be put into any of the banks.
All types of paper, including cardboard, can be put into the paper bank. Avoid packaging materials such as milk and juice cartons, which have a plastic lining. If you want to take part in the Council's paper collection scheme (where newspapers and magazines can be collected by the Council, once a month, at no charge), please contact (01282) 661743 .
Aluminium and steel cans can be deposited in all of the can banks in Pendle. You do not have to crush the cans as the Council has the facility to do this. Do NOT put paint containers or other chemicals into any of the can banks. Residents in Brierfield, Reedley, Earby and parts of Whitefield ward in Nelson already have their aluminium and steel cans collected as part of their regular collection of household waste.
Only plastic bottles can be recycled in Pendle's plastic recycle banks.
Unwanted clothing - damaged or unwearable - can be deposited in all of the borough's textile banks. This clothing is then given to charity shops, the homeless or even sent abroad. Clothing can often be converted into items such as cleaning cloths, filling for furniture or car insulation, and even re-woven into new yarn or fabric. Shoes should be tied together before being deposited in the banks as they tend to go astray.
Did you know that vegetable and fruit waste is the smelliest part of your dustbin?
Once vegetable and fruit waste is mixed with other household waste it decomposes and produces methane gas and an unpleasant smell.
If you put your vegetable and fruit waste into a compost bin, which the Council can provide, rather than putting it in your dustbin, you can avoid the smell, while reducing the amount of your household waste. The compost can later be used on your garden plants and herbs. For more information, see our Composting section.
Some Second Hand shops may accept unwanted household electrical or electronic goods that are still working or repairable.
The Council will collect unwanted fridges, cookers and large metal household items, such as those containing harmful gases. Contact (01282) 661743 for details. 'Open Door' - a project in Colne - collects good quality furniture and passes it on to people in need in Pendle. For more information, please ring (01282) 869596 .
Charity Shops
Charity shops accept good quality toys, clothing, bedding, curtains, textiles and books. It helps if the items are cleaned or washed.
